"My Background"

Birds and animals of many types have been a part of my life for many years. I was raised on a Dairy Farm in the area I now live. We had common pigeons at the dairy. I’m an old Animal Science major and have worked with and owned livestock most of my life. In the mid 80’s I acquired my first racing birds and shortly after that began flying competitively. I read everything about our birds I could get my hands on. I started visiting flyers across the South and Southwest and in Central California. I asked a lot of questions, made notes of conversations and tried to apply those things that fit my management style.

Success as a flyer came slow but still it came. We attended conventions, a few auctions, many seminars and visited a number of lofts as I traveled from Florida to the West coast.

My success in flying kept growing. It was obvious that only healthy pigeons won races, and like so many others, I was treating my birds almost weekly with one drug or another. Antibiotics with many names were in my medicine cabinet.

One of my sons Mike, a Pharmacist, checked my medication supply one weekend and asked how I was using many of the drugs he found. Then he quietly but firmly told me I was doing more harm than good. I was headed down a path that had no return.

I knew I was over-using, misusing and abusing drugs but felt it was necessary to win. Every one else was, that seemed to justify doing so. I felt I had to, to compete.

By chance I saw an article about how the poultry industry had switched from using antibiotics to natural products to keep poultry healthy, especially broiler producers. I think the USDA had a part in it. I started checking their methods and their results. It made sense. I had been using probiotics and I knew the benefits.

After some serious research and conversation with friends in the health an animal science business I started working with what was the forerunner of my Healthy Pigeon Blend. With help and advice from several sources we re-formulated our Blend and tested it as we made changes. My results changed too, for the better. I knew I could start with healthy pigeons and keep them healthy without using antibiotics and other drugs as a preventative. Now you can do the same, with my Healthy Pigeons Blend.
